There is a small shop about 200 meters from where I live that sells groceries(雜貨), meat and other basic necessities. About 10 years ago, there was a beggar who would go into the shop every day and ask the owner for a

1      . The owner,       2       he would love to help, simply didn’t have any jobs available, so he kept       3       the man.

This situation continued       4       for a few months, until the owner       5       to give the homeless man a job,        6       outside the shop. Every single day from 5 am, the homeless man was there doing the very      7       he could for the       8      , making it the community’s favorite, even though it did earn him pennies.       9      , the owner saw how good a job the man was doing and gave him a job working       10       a cashier(收銀員). He was watched closely to make sure that he didn’t       11       any of the money received from the sales. He was still homeless, after all. The homeless man did a(n)       12       job as a cashier

for over 2 years, and did such a good job that he was asked to       13       the finances for the whole shop.

To my       14      , this was the arrangements up until 2 years ago, when the owner       15      . In his will, he only had one       16      , to give the whole shop to the stable (穩定的), “homeless” man. Now, I could walk into that shop and see him working as hard as       17      , with his own business that is still       18       and active 10 years after getting his job as a sweeper.

From this story, we can probably draw a conclusion: work hard and give everything your best effort, even if your situation isn’t       19      . It may turn out to       20       some day in the future.

Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don’t look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back (追溯到) only one century, but some trees can provide a correct record of the weather even further back.

It is natural that a tree can grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight and rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable (有利的) to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk (樹干). To find the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that there was plenty of sun and rain then. If the rings are closed together, then the climate was bad for the tree.

Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand — no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why? A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move. So studying tree rings uncovers an exciting fact about the history of man.

  B. tree rings grow far apart

  C. trees in New Mexico will grow big and tall

(    )2. The scientists are interested in studying tree rings because they can tell ________.

  A. whether in that area the climate was favorable or not

  B. whether a particular tree was healthy or not

  C. whether people took good care of the trees or not

  D. how old the trees were

(    )3. The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because ________.

  A. they had cut down all the trees

  B. there were many trees there

  C. they had no water

  D. bad weather stopped the growth of trees

(    )4. The main idea of the passage is that _________.

  A. tree rings can tell the history of weather and the history of man

  B. destroying trees will do man no good

  C. studying tree rings is the only way to know the history of weather
